The movement that shapes your day mostly does not look like exercise. Standing, walking to the kitchen, fidgeting, taking stairs, shifting in a chair.

Everything you burn that is neither exercise nor digestion nor keeping you alive at rest. Fidgeting, maintaining posture, walking around, the small movements of ordinary life.

It is the largest and most variable component of daily energy expenditure outside your resting metabolic rate, and unlike a workout it happens continuously without being scheduled.

How much can it actually matter?

The overfeeding study is the clearest demonstration, and its numbers are striking.

Sixteen non-obese volunteers were fed 1,000 kcal per day above their maintenance needs for eight weeks, with energy storage and expenditure measured throughout (Levine et al. 1999).

Findings worth reading slowly:

Can I deliberately increase my NEAT?

Partly, and this is where honest framing matters.

The study measured a largely involuntary response. Participants were not instructed to fidget more; their bodies did it, to varying degrees, and the variation predicted the outcome. That means NEAT is best understood as an explanation for why two people eating identically end up in different places, rather than a technique you can simply adopt.

What you can do is add the deliberate end of the same spectrum, which is ordinary movement that is not a workout:

  • Walk while you would otherwise sit still. Phone calls, waiting, thinking.

  • Take the stairs, which is the single densest source of everyday effort most people have available.

  • Break up long sitting. Standing and moving briefly, often, is the pattern that matters more than any single bout.

  • Choose the slightly longer route. Parking further away, the further exit, the shop on foot.

  • Do the physical chores yourself. Gardening, cleaning, carrying.

None of these will replicate an eight-week involuntary metabolic response. All of them add real movement your charts will see, and they are where an extra thousand steps actually comes from.

Why does NEAT fall when you diet?

Because the same mechanism runs in reverse, and this is the practically important consequence.

If bodies ramp NEAT up in response to a surplus, they ramp it down in response to a deficit. Spontaneous movement quietly declines when energy is restricted: fewer unnecessary trips, less fidgeting, more sitting.

That drop is one of the least visible reasons weight loss plateaus, because it happens without any decision. Your deliberate exercise can be unchanged while your total daily movement falls.

The practical implication is unglamorous but useful: when you are in a deficit, deliberately protecting your everyday movement is acting on a channel that would otherwise close quietly. Steps are a reasonable proxy for exactly that, which is part of why they work as a whole-day signal.

Does my tracker see NEAT?

Partially, and the gaps are predictable.

Steps capture walking, which is a large share of it. What they miss is fidgeting, posture maintenance and upper-body movement, which is precisely the part the overfeeding study found most variable between people.

Active energy estimates try to capture more but inherit the accuracy problems of wearable energy estimation generally: across eight consumer devices tested against a metabolic analyzer, none met a 10% accuracy threshold for energy expenditure (Boudreaux et al. 2018).

So read your movement data as a directional measure of the walking portion, tracked against your own history. It will not quantify your NEAT, and no consumer device currently can.
