A thousand steps sounds like a project. It's about ten minutes of walking at an ordinary purposeful pace, which is roughly one phone call, one errand, or one lap of the block after dinner.
The reason it's worth bothering is that the research on small step increases is unusually encouraging, especially if you're starting from not very much.

That shape matters. The returns are steepest when you're starting low, so if your typical day is 3,000 steps, your next thousand is worth more than a marathon runner's next thousand. Being unremarkable at this is an advantage.

Where do a thousand steps come from?
From walking for about ten minutes, spread however suits you.
The useful anchor: research testing walking cadence against measured exercise intensity found 100 steps per minute is the threshold for moderate-intensity walking in adults (Tudor-Locke et al. 2020). So ten minutes of walking with purpose lands you near a thousand steps. That's arithmetic from a validated pace, not a promise about your particular stride.
The good news is that ten minutes doesn't need to happen at once.
Where can you find ten spare minutes?
Here's what has been tested, rather than what sounds plausible.
Walk to people instead of messaging them. In a randomized trial across 179 office workers, the group told to walk to colleagues rather than email, and to stand and move during meetings, added about 699 steps a day. A second group doing one sustained ten-minute walk each workday added about 968 (Gilson et al. 2009). The control group slightly declined.
Both approaches worked. The incidental one required no schedule at all.
Walk after meals. In a crossover trial of 41 adults with type 2 diabetes, walking for 10 minutes after each main meal lowered post-meal blood sugar by about 12% compared with a single 30-minute daily walk, with the strongest effect after the evening meal at about 22% (Reynolds et al. 2016, Diabetologia). Worth noting that was a study in people with diabetes, so don't over-read it for everyone. Three post-meal walks also happens to be 3,000 steps.
Break up long sitting. A meta-analysis found short light walking breaks during prolonged sitting meaningfully lowered post-meal glucose and insulin compared with sitting through. The protocols tested were modest: two minutes every 20 minutes, or five minutes every 30 (Buffey et al. 2022, Sports Medicine). Again, mostly studied in people with blood sugar problems, but the step arithmetic is universal: five two-minute breaks is about a thousand steps.
Take the calls standing. Any phone call that doesn't need a keyboard is ten minutes of walking hiding in your calendar.
Why does everyday movement matter so much?
Because the gap between people is mostly made of it, not of workouts.
There's a name for the energy you burn doing things that aren't exercise: fidgeting, standing, walking to the kitchen, carrying shopping. Between two people of similar size, this ordinary activity can differ by as much as 2,000 calories a day. In sedentary people it accounts for perhaps 6% to 10% of daily energy use; in active people, more than half (Endotext).
The classic demonstration overfed 16 volunteers by 1,000 calories a day for eight weeks. Fat gain differed ten-fold between individuals. Two thirds of the rise in daily energy burn came from increased non-exercise movement, and how much a person's everyday movement went up closely tracked who resisted gaining fat (Levine et al. 1999, Science).
Which is the argument for chasing incidental steps rather than a new gym habit: incidental movement is where the variation actually lives. It also explains why the scale can sit still while real change is happening, which is worth reading about in weight trends without the noise.
How long until it sticks?
Longer than the internet claims, and less fragile than you'd fear.
In a study following 96 people forming a new daily habit, the median time to reach near-automatic behavior was 66 days, with an enormous range from 18 to 254 days depending on the person and the habit (Lally et al. 2010).
The genuinely reassuring finding from that study: missing a single day did not meaningfully damage habit formation. One skipped walk doesn't reset anything. The thing that builds a habit is the general trend of doing it, which is also, conveniently, the thing your step data actually measures.
A week-long experiment

1. Find your typical weekday step count from the last month. That's your real baseline, not your best day. 2. Add 500 steps to it, which is about five minutes. 3. Hold that for a week, then add another 500.
