Fewer than the internet says, and the evidence here is unusually good.

In 2025, researchers combined the results of 57 separate studies (a meta-analysis, the strongest kind of evidence medicine has) and found that, compared with 2,000 steps a day, people averaging about 7,000 had a 47% lower risk of dying from any cause, a 25% lower risk of cardiovascular disease, and a 38% lower risk of dementia. The authors called 7,000 "a more realistic and achievable target" than 10,000 (Ding et al. 2025).

That result did not come out of nowhere. It confirmed a pattern a decade of research had been sketching:

  • The benefit starts low. In 16,741 older women, risk of early death was 41% lower at about 4,400 steps a day compared with 2,700, and the benefit leveled off around 7,500 (Lee et al. 2019, JAMA Internal Medicine).

Where did the 10,000-step goal come from?

A marketing campaign. In 1965, a Japanese company sold a pedometer called manpo-kei, which translates to "10,000 steps meter."
