Why your resting heart rate runs high some weeks

You open the app and your resting heart rate is running four beats above its usual. Before you read anything ominous into that, it helps to know two things: how big a change actually counts as a change, and what the ordinary causes are worth.

Both have been measured. The answers are reassuring and more specific than the usual advice to get more rest.

How big a rise is actually a rise?

Smaller than you'd guess, which is good news for reading the signal.

Across 92,457 people tracked for a median of 320 days, the typical individual's resting heart rate wobbled by about 3 bpm from week to week, and roughly 80% of people stayed inside a 10 bpm band across the entire study (Quer et al. 2020).

Does alcohol raise your resting heart rate?

Yes, more reliably than almost anything else on this list, and at doses lower than most people assume.

The largest real-world look comes from 20,968 people wearing trackers across more than five million person-days. Just one drink above someone's personal average was associated with overnight resting heart rate about 2.8 bpm higher in women and 2.4 bpm higher in men, and the effect scaled with the number of drinks (Grosicki et al. 2026). The effects were larger in women and in younger adults.

A controlled study fills in the shape. Forty adults were monitored across three alcohol-free nights, three drinking nights and three nights after. Overnight resting heart rate rose from 63.6 to 66.6 bpm during the drinking phase, then dropped back toward baseline once drinking stopped (Strüven et al. 2025, Nutrients).

Two details from that study are worth carrying. The doses were not small, at 40 g of alcohol a day for women and 60 g for men, which works out to roughly three US standard drinks and four respectively. And objective sleep architecture barely changed while subjective sleep quality dropped. People slept through much the same stages and still woke up feeling worse, with a faster heart all night.

If your number is up and there were drinks involved, you've almost certainly found your answer. It resolves on its own within a couple of days.

What does short sleep actually do?

Something more interesting than "raises it," and the timing is the surprise.

Fifteen healthy young men spent 11 days in a lab: three nights of 10 hours, five nights restricted to 5 hours, then two recovery nights back at 10. Daytime heart rate during the restriction phase was 1.2 bpm lower than baseline. During recovery it was 5.5 bpm higher, and after two full nights of catch-up sleep it still had not come back down (Reichenberger et al. 2023).

Read that carefully, because it inverts the intuition. The bill for a short week arrives when you start sleeping normally again, not while you're running on fumes. If your resting heart rate looks worst on the weekend after a brutal week, that is a known pattern rather than a sign you're falling apart.

The caveats are real: 15 young men, a lab setting, and daytime heart rate rather than a wearable's resting estimate. But it lines up with the everyday data, where resting heart rate sat at its minimum around 7 to 7.5 hours of sleep a night and rose on both sides of that (Quer et al. 2020).

Why does it climb in the heat and in January?

Because cooling you down is work, and because winter is genuinely worse.

Heat acts earlier than most people realise. Across 51 people in an environmental chamber, heart rate at a fixed workload started climbing before core temperature began to rise (Cottle et al. 2023, Journal of Applied Physiology). Your heart responds to heat stress before you feel hot, which is why a warm night can raise the number without you noticing anything at all.

The seasonal pattern runs the other way and is larger than you'd expect. In the 92,457-person dataset, average resting heart rate moved about 2 bpm across the year, peaking in the first week of January and reaching its minimum at the end of July.

So the single worst week of the year to judge your resting heart rate is the one right after the holidays, when the seasonal peak, the drinking and the disrupted sleep all land together. That number is not a referendum on your fitness.

Can it rise before you feel unwell?

It often does, and this is well documented.

In a cohort of nearly 5,300 people wearing smartwatches, 32 developed confirmed COVID-19. Twenty-six of them (81%) showed changes in heart rate, step count or sleep. Of the 25 with detected physiological changes, 22 were flagged at or before symptom onset, and four at least nine days earlier (Mishra et al. 2020, Nature Biomedical Engineering).

Two boundaries around that finding. It was retrospective, so researchers knew who got sick and went looking. And an elevated resting heart rate is wildly non-specific: it rises for drinks, heat, stress, hard training and dozens of other reasons far more often than it rises for an infection.

The honest version is that your body often starts spending extra effort before you consciously notice, and resting heart rate is one of the places that spending shows up. That's a reason to take an unexplained rise as a nudge to go easier, not as a reason to search your symptoms.

What about stress and hard training?

Both raise it, and both belong in the same category: your body is doing more work than usual, and the heart is keeping the books.

A demanding training week is a stressor like any other. So is a difficult stretch at work. Neither is a malfunction, and neither needs fixing beyond the obvious. The reason to notice is that a rise you can explain is a rise you can stop worrying about, and a rise you cannot explain is the one worth watching.

When should I actually pay attention?

The pattern that matters is not the height. It's the duration and the absence of a cause.

A few beats up for a few days, with an obvious explanation, is your body working correctly and reporting honestly. It settles on its own. What deserves a closer look is a rise that persists for weeks with no explanation you can find, especially alongside feeling genuinely run down, breathless, or unwell.

That's a conversation with a clinician, not an app. What an app is actually good for here is the boring part: holding enough history that you can tell the difference between a bad week and a new normal.
